Italy and Japan want to implement the landmark 2015 Paris climate pact and to combat protectionism - within a multilateral framework - premier Giuseppe Conte said on Wednesday after talks in Rome with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe.

"Italy and Japan reiterated our common will to support effective multilateralism based on the United Nations, to support the implementation of the Paris climate agreement," Conte stated.

"We want to fight against protectionism, to support a fair and open based trading system based on World Trade Organization rules," Conte said.

The G20 summit taking place on 28-29 June in the Japanese city of Osaka will be "an opportunity to make progress in this direction,", Conte noted.

During their meeting, Conte and Abe also agreed on the need to strengthen economic cooperation in the innovation and defence industries and in the fields of science and technology, he added.

The economic partnership agreement between the European Union and Japan which came into force in February "opens up new pathways and opportunities for bilateral cooperation," Conte underlined.
