Conte urges withdrawal of Haftar's forces from Tripoli

There is no "military solution" to Libya's conflict and eastern warlord Khalifa Haftar must end his three-week assault on Tripoli, the UN-backed Presidential Council cited Italy's premier Giuseppe Conte as telling premier Fayez al-Sarraj on Friday.

"There is no military solution to the crisis in Libya," the Presidential Council's Facebook page quoted Conte as saying to Sarraj in a phonecall.

"Haftar's forces must return to their positions prior to the (4 April) offensive," Conte said, quoted by the Presidential Council.

Italy would "make every effort to end the crisis and the bloodshed among Libyans, Conte underlined, according to the Presidential Council.

At least 278 people have been killed and 1,332 injured in this month's military escalation in Tripoli while over 30,000 people have fled their homes, according to the United Nations.

The deadly clashes pit forces allied with the UN-backed government against Haftar's self-styled Libyan National Army, which entered Tripoli on 5 April.

Libya, a former Italian colony, has been in chaos since the Nato-backed ouster of late dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.

Italy supports UN efforts towards a ceasefire in Tripoli and the stabilisation of Libya through negotiated political settlement of the conflict and the holding of elections.
