Italy has a "strong commitment" to kick-starting UN mediated talks aimed at a political settlement to Libya's deadly conflict, premier Giuseppe Conte told its UN-backed prime minister Fayez al-Sarraj in Rome on Tuesday.

During his meeting with Sarraj, Conte "underscored the Italian government's strong commitment to revitalising an effective and sustainable political process," his office said in a statement.

"Conte also confirmed the need to avoid any further escalation of violence in order to get talks underway between the (warring) sides - facilitated by the UN and with the international community's united support," the statement said.

"This is needed for Libya's people and its stability, also that of the entire region," the statement added.

Conte's talks with Sarraj "provided an opportunity for an update on developments on the ground and an exchange of views on the situation in Libya," according to the statement.

Tuesday's talks came after a military escalation in the Libyan capital Tripoli in which the UN says at least 432 people have died, 2,069 people have been injured, and over 50,000 have fled their homes.

The battle for Tripoli pits eastern warlord Khalifa Haftar's self-styled Libyan National Army against militias loyal to the Sarraj government and began when Haftar ordered an assault to take the capital on 4 April.

Oil-rich Libya, a former Italian colony, has been in chaos since the Nato-backed uprising that ousted late dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
