Italy deplores move to prosecute Venezuelan lawmakers

Italy's foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi on Wednesday strongly condemned the judicial orders issued against seven members of Venezuela's National Assembly, who have been stripped of their parliamentary immunity.

A statement issued by Italy's foreign ministry said Milanesi, expressed his “firmest condemnation for the provisions, which violate the basic principles of parliamentary immunity and the Rule of Law."

"Similar repressive acts do nothing to help finding a democratic and peaceful solution to the serious Venezuelan situation, to achieve which the Italian government is working together with the European Union, also within the International Contact Group,” Milanesi said.

One of the seven MPs, Mariela Magallanes, who is married to an Italian citizen, is being hosted at the Italian ambassador's residence in Caracas.

Until she becomes an Italian citizen, Magallanes will receive "all possible protection and hospitality, in complete compliance with diplomatic conventions," the statement concluded.

Venezuela's Supreme Court ordered the prosecution of the seven lawmakers over their alleged participation in a failed military uprising led byopposition leader Juan Guaido.

Guaid declared himself Venezuela's interim leader in January and has been recognised by recognised by more than 50 nations.

As the head of the opposition-controlled National Assembly, Guaido invoked the constitution to assume an interim presidency, arguing that leftist president Nicolas Maduro's re-election last year was illegitimate.
