Italian lawmakers visit European University Institute

Members of the lower house of parliament's foreign affairs committee on Thursday visited the European University Institute think-tank outside Florence as part of efforts to forge closer ties with the international organisations that Italy hosts, the parliament said in a statement.

During the visit, the parliamentary delegation made up of foreign affairs committee chair Marta Grande and fellow MPs Yana Chiara Ehm and Ivan Scalfarotto visited the EUI's historical archive and its monumental complex of Villa Salviati as well as the Renaissance Palazzo Buontalenti, where were due to be briefed on the planned restoration work, the statement said.

The lawmakers were also due to receive talks on the institute's activities, especially those of its School of Transnational Governance, from EUI president Renaud Dehousse and secretary-general Vincenzo Grassi, said the statement.

Located in Fiesole, the leading academic institution specialising in transnational public policy studies was founded in 1972 and has 23 European Union member states plus Switzerland and Norway.

Heads of state, leading politicians and professors are regular speakers at the EUI, as part of the Institute’s long-established programme of conferences, workshops and summer schools.

The EUI states that its mission is “to foster the advancement of learning in fields which are of particular interest for the development of Europe”.
