Unsmil deplores kidnap of lawmaker from Libya's eastern based parliament

The United Nations mission to Libya on Thursday condemned the abduction in Benghazi of Siham Sergewa, an MP from the parliament based in the eastern city of Tobruk and urged her immediate release.

"Unsmil deplores enforced disappearance of elected House of Representative member Ms Sergewa, calling for her immediate release," the mission tweeted.

Sergewa was reportedly snatched late on Wednesday from her home in the eastern city of Benghazi by armed gunmen, who injured her husband, Unsmil said in a statement, adding that it was "gravely concerned" at the abduction.

Unsmil urged Libyan authorities to investigate Sergewa's abduction and to reveal her whereabouts, said the Unsmil statement posted to Twitter.

"Unsmil calls for the immediate release of Ms. Sergewa. Enforced disappearance, unlawful arrest and abduction based on political views or affiliations constitute a serious blow to the rule of law and blatant violations of international humanitarian and human rights law," it added.

Unsmil is strongly committed to the crucial role Libyan women play in peacebuilding and to their full participation in Libyan politics and decision-making, said the statement.

"Silencing the voices of women in decision-making position will not be tolerated," the statement underlined.

Sergewa vanished a day after she appeared on Libya Al-Hadat TV owned by eastern warlord Khalifa Hafta, the Libyan Observer daily reports.

Sergewa told Al-Hadat that those waging the three-month-old battle for Tripoli were extremists and urged a new national unity government containing all Libya's political factions including the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood and other parties opposing Haftar, according to the Libyan Observer.
