'Conte may hold three-way talks in with Sarraj and Macron'

Italy's premier Giuseppe Conte could hold a joint meeting in Rome on Wednesday with his Libyan counterpart Fayez al-Sarraj and France's president Emmanual Macron, the Libyan Observer daily cited unnamed sources as saying on its website.

Conte was due to hold talks in Rome with Sarraj at midday which were expected to centre on Libya's ongoing civil war and international diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

Sarraj's visit to Rome on Wednesday coincides with one by Macron, who is slated to hold talks with Conte at 8pm on migration and on preparations for an international conference on Libya, which will be hosted by Germany with support from the US.

The international conference to be held in Berlin will work towards a truce in the more-than-five-month-old battle for Tripoli between eastern warlord Khalifa Haftar's forces and militias loyal to the internationally recognised Sarraj government.

A ceasefire in Libya would pave the way for UN mediated talks between the country's rival factions leading to elections and a political solution of the eight-year conflict that has wracked the oil-rich state since the Nato backed ouster of late dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
