Italy's deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re and defence ministry under-secretary Giulio Calvisi will on Thursday greet a group of seriously ill Libyan children who are due to arrive at Rome's Ciampino airport, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
The children, who come from the Benghazi area in eastern Libya and all suffer from hematologic diseases, will receive treatment at the Vatican's Bambin Gesu paediatric hospital in Rome, the statement said.
The children will land at Ciampino aboard an Italian airforce plane and are being brought to Italy under its overseas aid department's humanitarian aid programme, according to the statement.
The Bambin Gesu hospital is cooperating with the initiative, the statement said.
Hematologic diseases include blood cell cancers, rare genetic disorders, anaemia, conditions related to HIV, sickle cell disease, and complications from chemotherapy or transfusions.
