Conte, other Nato leaders gather for UK summit

Italy's premier Giuseppe Conte is among Nato leaders attending a UK summit to mark the alliance' 70th anniversary, which kicks off on Tuesday, Conte's office said in a statement.

Together with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, British prime minister Boris Johnson and the other Nato leaders, Conte will be a guest of UK head of state Queen Elizabeth II at a reception at Buckingham Palace in central London at 6pm, according to the statement.

Conte will later on Tuesday have an 'informal meeting' with Johnson at his 10 Downing Street residence, the statement said.

On Wednesday, the Nato leaders including Conte will attend the summit, which is being held at The Grove (a five-star hotel in Watford, north of London), said the statement.

The leaders "are expected to agree on a number of measures, including further improvements to the readiness of Allied forces, recognizing space as an operational domain, and updating Nato’s action plan against terrorism," according to a Nato comunique.

"Leaders are also due to have a strategic discussion on Russia and the future of arms control, as well as the rise of China," it went on.

"Allies are also expected to assess the progress being made on burden sharing in the Alliance," the comunique added.

The summit will give members the chance to address “current and emerging security challenges and how Nato continues to invest and adapt to ensure it will remain a pillar of stability in the years ahead,” said Stoltenberg.

United Kingdom was one of NATO’s twelve founding members and London was the home of NATO’s first headquarters
