Del Re urges greater rights for the disabled

Despite progress in recent decades, a lot remains to be done to ensure the rights of the disabled and to educate people on their needs, Italy's deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re said on Tuesday.

“Much still needs to be done to educate people to respect diversity,” Del Re stated at an event in Rome to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, according to a foreign ministry statement.

Disabled athlete Salvatore Cimmino and manager Giorgio Novello attended the Rome event, which also showcased Italian bioengineered jewels for disabled persons, the statement said.

Italy's foreign ministry and its development cooperation have shown their commitment to promoting the full recognition of disabled persons’ rights, in according with the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development goal of “not leaving anyone behind”, said Del Re.

“Our initiatives aim to involve institutions, civil society and businesses in the provision of products and services enabling disabled persons to study and work like everybody else,” she said.
