Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio was on Monday due to take part in a European Union Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels centred on the bloc's ties with the African Union and human rights, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
The EU foreign ministers will discuss EU-Africa relations ahead of upcoming EU-African Union ministerial meetings and a summit in 2020.
The foreign ministers may also "touch upon" political developments in Libya and Bolivia, and the situation in Iran, according to the European Council's website.
The ministers will lunch with the EU's new foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, who will "share his perspective on the next few years", the European Council said.
The Foreign Affairs Council convenes once a month. It brings together foreign ministers of EU member states. EU defence and trade ministers can also attend the meetings depending on the agenda.
