The killing of top Iranian general Qasem Soleimani in a United States air strike in Iraq may have "very serious" geopolitical ramifications, Italy's economy commissioner Paolo Gentiloni warned on Friday.

"Soleimani's elimination may have very serious consequences. Italy and Europe must commit immediately to reducing the risk of an escalation (of tensions) and of destablisation," Gentiloni tweeted.

The tweet came amid a sharp rise in long-running hostilities between Tehran and Washington after the drone strike at Baghdad airport early on Friday ordered by US president Donald Trump.

Iran vowed harsh revenge after the killing of Soleimani, who was regarded as the second most powerful figure in Iran after Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the architect of Iran's growing military influence in the Middle East.

The US drone attack also killed top Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, an adviser to Soleimani who founded and led the Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia. Washington blamed Kataib Hezbolla for the killing of a US civilian contractor in northern Iraq last Friday.
