Medical staff may arrive in Italy from abroad - minister

A number of countries are ready to send doctors and nurses to support frontline medical staff in coronavirus-hit Italy, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio wrote Thursday on Facebook.

"In the past few hours, I have been in touch with various foreign ministers who have conveyed to me their government's solidarity and confirmed that they wish to keep helping Italy," read Di Maio's post.

"This is always wonderful news, especially if in a sign of friendship they want to send us their doctors and nurses to give ours some relief."

Italian diplomats are working hard to obtain the million face masks, other protective equipment and ventilators Italy's severely under-resourced hospitals need to fight the dramatic Covid-19 outbreak which began in late February, according to Di Maio.

The Covid-19 epidemic has killed at least 13,155 people in Italy including over 60 doctors - more victims than in any other country - and has infected 110,574 according to the civil protection agency. Although deaths decreased on Wednesday, positive cases increased for the first time in six days and some officials have questioned the accuracy of the death toll data.
