A statement from Italy's foreign ministry on Friday supported a United Nations ceasefire appeal for a ceasefire in war-wracked Libya during the holy fasting month of Ramadan.
"On the occasion of the beginning of Ramadan, Italy firmly supports the appeal launched by UN acting special envoy of the UN Support Mission in Libya, Stephanie Williams for a humanitarian truce in Libya," the statement said.
All countries which took part in a conference on Libya held in Berlin in January that pledged to end violations of a UN arms embargo and to cease foreign meddling in the country, should "publicly back" Williams' appeal, the statement said.
"Ramadan is an opportunity to lay down arms, to tackle the Covid-19 coronairus emergency and try and ease the suffering and problems of the most vulnerable people in Libya, including those who fled their homes, migrants and asylum-seekers," said the statement.
