Itlaly's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and United States secretary of state Mike Pompeo will next week co-chair a videoconference of 32 members of the international coalition against the Islamic State jihadist group, the foreign ministry stated on Wednesday.

The videoconference on 4 June will focus in particular on the coalition's activities in Iraq and Syria, where there have been recent signs that IS insurgents are regrouping - amid a series of large-scale and coordinated attacks - according to the foreign ministry statement.

During the virtual meeting, the coalition members will review its strategy to counter IS also in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the statement said.

Italy is due to host a plenary meeting 82-member coalition members, which will be scheduled as soon as circumstances permit, the statement underlined.

The 4 June meeting will also focus on the global ramifications of the terrorist group, especially in West Africa and the Sahel, the statement noted.

"In line with its multidimensional commitment in the region, Italy promotes greater involvement of the Coalition in this area, in order to strengthen the security of the entire Mediterranean basin," the statement concluded.
