Democracy crucial to citizens' welfare says Italy

Democratic values, the rule of law and human rights remain key as the world faces unprecedented challenges, some of which have been made ever-more pressing by the COVID-19 pandemic, Italy's deputy foreign minister Emanuela Del Re said on Friday.

"We must highlight the results obtained by our democracies, which have shown their ability to adapt to extraordinary times with extraordinary measures while ensuring proportionality, transience and transparency, Del Re stated.

"This approach that has allowed us to protect the health and well-being of our fellow citizens while remaining anchored to democratic values, the rule of law and human rights," she went on, according to a foreign ministry statement.

Del Re made the remarks at a videoconference of the Community of Democracies marking the 20th anniversary of the Warsaw Declaration of 2000, signed by 106 countries, including Italy.

"Today, more than ever, it is important to uphold the Warsaw Declaration and reaffirm our commitment to it. Our democratic societies should stand united in full solidarity and in defence of our common values," Del Re tweeted.

"Strong democracies are instrumental to the fulfilment of multilateralism. An effective multilateralism is not only a prerequisite to address global challenges but also a vehicle to strengthen democratic systems in our own countries," read a separate tweet.

"A global order based on rules and international law will allow our democracies to thrive and vice-versa."
