Italy considers Israel's security to be crucial in the conflict-wracked Middle East region and is eager to strengthen its strategic partnership with the Jewish state, especially in the areas of tourism, science and technology, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Wednesday.
Italy continues to support a just, sustainable two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, negotiated between the two sides, Di Maio told Israel's new foreign minister Gabi Ashkenazi during phone talks, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Di Maio said during the talks that he hoped tourism between Italy and Israel would resume as soon as the COVID-19 pandemic allowed, according to the statement.
