Tensions between Greece and Turkey over its oil and gas exploration in disputed waters in the energy-rich Eastern Mediterranean were at the centre of phone talks Thursday between Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di Maio and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu.
During the phone talks, Di Maio "reiterated the need for all parties to maintain a moderate and cooperative approach to reduce tensions and resolve outstanding issues," the Italian foreign ministry said in a statement.
Italy is committed to working to facilitate dialogue, Di Maio told Cavusoglu, according to the statement.
Di Maio also reaffirmed his full support for efforts by European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell to resume "an effective and constructive dialogue between the parties," the statement ended.
Cavusoglu tweeted on Thursday that he "discussed regional developments, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean, during phone calls with European counterparts".
A Turkish survey ship began an exploration mission in the Eastern Mediterranean on Monday, angering Greece.
