Italy and the government is working "intensively with European countries and with the United States - "a highly strategic ally" to stabilise the war-wracked oil state, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Wednesday.
"We are working intensely with our European allies and with the US to support a path of dialogue aimed at a permanent ceasefire," Di Maio said.
"Libya is a matter of national security for Italy."
Di Maio was speaking a joint press conference with US secretary of state Mike Pompei who visited Rome on Wednesday and also held talks with Italy's premier Giuseppe Conte.
"Input from such a strategic ally as the US represents a key contribution to the stability of the entire region," Di Maio added.
Di Maio hailed "progress" made in recent weeks in talks between Libya's warring factions and dialogue between countries that wield influence in the former Italian colony.
