Nagorno-Karabakh conflict concerns Italy

The recent hostilities between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh worry Italy, which believes Turkey can play a "decisive" role in resolving the conflict, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Friday.

"Italy is worried by the conflict taking place in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh," Di Maio told reporters in Rome after talks with Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu.

''The status quo is not sustainable. A negotiated solution is needed. We are confident that Turkey can play a decisive role," Di Maio said.

Cavusoglu urged states to pressure Armenia to withdraw from Nagorno-Karabakh to allow a truce, saying the country had "invaded" Azerbaijani territory.

"If Azerbaijan were to ask Turkey for help, we would give it support and no one could object to this. We are a single nation," Cavusoglu told the press conference.

Armenia's foreign ministry said on Friday it "stands ready to engage" with France, Russia and the United States on halting six days of fighting with neighbouring Azerbaijan.

Both sides accusing each other of launching deadly attacks since Sunday amid mounting casualties. In the latest fighting, Azerbaijan forces said they had made further advances, but accused Armenia of artillery attacks on four villages.

The Nagorno-Karabakh enclave is officially part of Azerbaijan but is run by ethnic Armenians.

The two former Soviet republics engaged in a war over the territory between 1988 and 1994, eventually declaring a ceasefire, but they have never reached a settlement over the dispute.
