Italy eyes stronger ties with Ukraine, backs permanent ceasefire in east

Italy wants to boost its relations with Ukraine and is eager to see a permanent truce in the war-torn eastern Donbass region and a "sustainable" solution to the armed conflict that began in 2014, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"Italy's foreign minister Luigi Di recalling his support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, expressed his appreciation for the general holding of the ceasefire, hoping for positive developments in the negotiations and encouraging a sustainable solution in line with the Minsk agreements," said the statement.

The ministry issued the statement after talks by Di Maio at the foreign minister with the head of Ukraine's presidential administration and with responsibility for negotiations on Donbass, Andrii Yermak, and the Ukrainian deputy premier for Euro-Atlantic integration, Olga Stefanishynaalso.

The talks also "discussed the ongoing strengthening of bilateral relations, with particular attention to economic and trade cooperation, and the forthcoming meeting of the Italian-Ukrainian Council for Economic, Industrial and Financial Cooperation," the statement concluded.

The simmering conflict between Ukraine's military and Russian-backed rebels in Donbass has killed over 13,000 people since 2014, when protests at the February–March 2014 annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation escalated.

Major combat ended with a truce agreed in the Belarus capital Minsk in 2015.
