Italy to promote multilateralism during G20 presidency

During its upcoming presidency of the Group of Twenty, Italy will promote multilateralism, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio stated on Thursday.

"Italy will hold the G20 presidency in 2021, where the world's major nations will coordinate...The current crisis (the COVID-19 pandemic) is a financial and health one," Di Maio said at an event in Rome.

Italy is also organising with the UK the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) taking place in Glasgow in November next year, Di Maio noted.

"Together we will keep attention focused on the ecological transition," Di Maio said.

The climate summit will assess progress made around the world since the landmark 2015 Paris Agreement to keep global warming to below 2C and limit the increase to 1.5C.
