Italy and Spain share a "special relationship" and hold similar views on international trade, foreign undersecretary Ivan Scalfarotto said on Tuesday, according to a foreign ministry statement.

"Italy and Spain have a special relationship and very similar visions within the European Union," Scalfarotto said during talks with Spain's secretary of state for foreign trade, Xiana Mendez Bertolo, according to the statement.

Economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic makes more necessary than ever the effective functioning of the multilateral system of world trade, Scalfarotto stressed.

"The EU-Mercosur agreement offers important economic opportunities to both European and South American companies and we hope that it will soon be concluded," he said.

Scalfarotto stressed the need to close the negotiations on fisheries subsidies at the WTO within the established end-2020 time frame and agreed with Mendez that a solution needs to be found on the taxation of digital services, the statement noted.

Scalfarotto and Mendez also voiced concern at the stalemate in negotiations between the UK and EU on their future trade relations, the statement added.

"In the Airbus- Boeing case, Scalfarotto and Mendez said they hoped that, following the WTO ruling authorizing the EU to impose duties on imports from the United States, an agreed solution could soon be reached for the removal of tariffs on both sides for the benefit of companies engaged in transatlantic trade," the statement concluded.
