Libya permanent ceasefire important for Italy's security says Di Maio

The permanent ceasefire agreed between Libya's two warring sides in military talks in Geneva is of vital importance for Italy and the Mediterranean region's security, but must now be put in place throughout the war-torn country, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio said on Friday.

"Today was an important day for the security of our country," Di Maio said in a statement after the UN mission in Libya announced the accord.

"This is an important achievement for Libya, which deserves a future of peace, security and prosperity. But this is also a very important step for our security and for the entire Mediterranean."

The stabilization of Libya is essential to control the migrant influx to Europea and fight the terrorist groups that "infest" the Sahel region, Di Maio stated.

"We must now continue to work together with the United Nations to ensure that the ceasefire is implemented and respected by all Libyan parties and by all international actors involved," Di Maio underlined.

Italian diplomats have been "constantly" working a ceasefire, for the resumption of oil production and for a comprehensive political agreement to end the turmoil in Libya and stabilise the war-torn country, he said.

"But the work is far from over and we will not stop until we have restored peace, security and stability to Libya. The next step is the Libyan Forum for Dialogue, which Italy supports and which will serve the Libyans to define the institutional future of their country."

Friday's ceasefire deal, reached in Geneva after UN-mediated talks between military representatives of the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli and warlord Khalifa Haftar’s eastern-based Libyan National Army militia, will be followed by political talks in Tunisia next month.
