Italy will always be a friend and ally of the United States, irrespective of which president gets into the White House, foreign minister Luigi Di Maio told local website Tpi.it.
"The Italian government is awaiting the official results before making any comment. We will always be friends and allies of the US," said Di Maio.
"As I said on the eve of the elections, our alliance is solid and won't be affected by who is elected president," Di Maio went on.
Italy's government worked very well with the administration of US president Donald Trump since he took office in 2016, and high-quality Italian goods have always received protection during Trump's presidency, Di Maio claimed.
"We will continue to work harmoniously with the next administration," Di Maio added.
Democratic challenger Joe Biden was on Friday appeared on the verge of winning the US presidency with 264 electoral college votes against Trump's 214, as vote counting continued in a turbulent election and amid a record turnout.
