Alleged paedophile priest arrested in southern Italy

Brindisi, 20 May - Italian police Wednesday put a former parish priest in the southern Italian city of Brindisi under house arrest who is accused of sex abuse against minors dating back over 20 years.

Prosecutors launched a probe against 73-year-old Giampiero Peschiulli last year after he was unmasked by Italian TV show Le Iene (Resevoir Dogs) that specialises in stings.

Two parents of alleged victims of Peschiulli had repeatedly complained about him to the local bishop at the time, Rocco Talucci, who urged the families to keep quiet about the abuse, according to prosecutors.

One victim, now aged 30, was cited as telling prosecutors that when he was 10 years old, Peschiulli "repeatedly" fondled his genitals.

Peschiulli's left his post after the alleged abuse was unveiled in October and child pornography was found during police searches of his home.

"Down with Don Peschiulli and the Church! Paedophiles keep your hands off our kids!" was daubed on buildings near the offices of the local diocese, which were also searched by police.

Peschiulli also reported to police alleged death threats he received.

Locals in Brindisi claimed Peschiulli's abuse of minors was an open secret.
