Authorities have arrested the alleged head of the terrorist cell behind last week's deadly attacks on the Bardo museum in Tunis, a senior government official said on Wednesday.

In an interview with local daily Le Maghreb, the Tunisian interior ministry's senior security official Rafik Chelli did not name the suspect but said he was due to be questioned.

The cell that planned the 18 March attack on the Bardo museum in which 23 people including 20 foreign tourists died contained 16 members, "many" of whom had now been arrested, Chelli said.

Two Tunisian gunmen, Jaber Kachnaoui and Yassine Abidi, who carried out the attack, died in a firefight with police, while a third gunman, Maher Kaidi was still on the run, Chelli stated.

Two suspects belonging to the alleged jihadist cell had recently returned from Syria, Chelli added.

Since the attack security had been stepped up at the Bardo museum and other monuments and sensitive sites as well as in Tunisia's major cities, he said.

The Bardo museum attack was claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group and has prompted thousands of Europeans to cancel bookings in Tunisia.
