Police on Wednesday closed down a children's home near Rome and were investigating its director and four other staff members over alleged sexual and physical abuse against minors living at the home.
One of the suspects was placed under house arrest and the other four were banned from the area.
The children's home was in the seaside town of Santa Marinella, north of Rome. Reports did not state the children's ages.
