The Moroccan man arrested in Italy had an "indirect" role in the 18 March Bardo museum attack that killed 20 tourists, the Tunisian interior ministry's spokesman said Wednesday.

"Touil Abdelmajid gave support to the terrorist group that carried out the attack," Mohammed Ali Laroui told Adnkronos International (AKI).

Laroui refused to elabaorate on Abdelmajid's alleged role in the Bardot assault by several gunmen but told AKI he had been "in Tunis" on the day.

Italian anti-terror police arrested 22-year-old Abdelmajid late Tuesday near an apartment in the northern town of Gaggiano, where he was living with his mother and two brothers.

Tunisia had issued an international warrant for Abdelmajid's arrest and has asked Italy to extradite him for questioning.

He arrived in Italy on a migrant boat in February and returned to North Africa to take part in the Bardo attack, according to investigators.

A 23-member cell with allegiances to several jihadist groups is believed to be behind the Bardo assault, which also killed a Tunisian policeman and injured over 50 people.

Two gunmen died in a shoot-out with security forces after taking tourists hostage inside the museum.

A third gunman was on the run and several people had been arrested, Tunisia’s President Beji Caid Essebsi said a few days after the attack.

At the end of March, Tunisia claimed to have killed the alleged leader of the assault, Algerian militant Lokman Abu Sakhra.
