Tunisia has asked Italy to extradite the 22-year-old Moroccan man arrested near Milan on suspicion of taking part in the 18 March attack on the Bardo museum Tunis which killed 20 tourists and a policeman.

Tunisia is currently coordinating the repatriation of Touil Abdelmajid with Italian authorities, interior ministry spokesman Mohammed Ali Laroui said, cited by the national news agency TAP.

Abdelmajid is suspected of assisting the terrorist group that carried out the Bardo Museum attack, Laroui said.

He is on a wanted list in Tunisia and is the subject of an international arrest warrant, Laroui said.

It was not immediately clear if and when Abdelmajid would be sent to Tunisia for questioning.

There is speculation Abdelmajid may have been the third gunman who survived a shoot-out with police during the Bardo assault.

The two Tunisian assailants who had opened fire on tourists outside the Bardo were gunned down at the scene after taking hostages inside the museum and a third gunman was on the run, Tunisia’s President Beji Caid Essebsi said a few days after the attack.

Italy's Digos counter-terrorism police arrested Abdelmajid late Tuesday near an apartment in the northern town of Gaggiano, where he was living with his mother and two brothers. He arrived in Italy on a migrant boat in February and returned to North Africa to take part in the Bardo attack, according to investigators.

Tunisia said it had arrested most of those responsible for the attack, which was claimed by the Islamic State but which is believed to have been launched by a cell of 23 militants with allegiances to several jihadist groups.
