Anarchists jailed for attack on high-speed train link

An Italian court on Wednesday jailed three anarchists for attacking a the construction site of a controversial high-speed railway linking Italy to France.

The anarchists received prison sentences of two years, 10 months and 20 days from the court in the northern Italian city of Turin.

Prosecutors had asked for prison terms of five years and six months for the trio.

The anarchists had been jail since July last year awaiting trial and the court ordered them to serve the rest of their sentences under house arrest.

The trio stood trial for damaging the construction site in Chiomonte in the Italian Alps on 14 May 2013 and carrying weapons.

They were arrested in the northern city of Milan last July.

Opponents of the high-speed rail link, including residents and environmental activists, have campaigned against it for years, claiming it will damage the ecosystem of the Alps.

Residents in the area also object to the drilling of a tunnel which they claim could release potentially harmful materials.
