A conductor risks the amputation of his left arm after he was attacked with a machete, allegedly by a Latin American youth who boarded a local train at the Expo trade fair in northwest Milan late Thursday without a ticket.

A second employee of the train company sustained a serious head injury when he tried to come to the conductor's aid, after which the attacker fled together with three or four other Latin American youths.

Two Latin American youths with blood stained clothing were later detained and cross-questioned by police for several hours. One of the youths was already known to police.

DNA tests were being carried out and police were examining security camera footage from the train carriage and from Villapizzone station where the Latin American gang boarded the train in a bid to identify the youths.

Meanwhile the 30-year-old train conductor, C.D., underwent a seven-hour operation overnight at Milan's Niguarda hospital as four surgeons battled to save his arm.

The surgeons said on Friday it was too early to tell if the operation was successful.

"The outlook for the patient will become clearer in the next few days," they stated in a bulletin.
