Prosecutors are investigating three people over the death of a four-year-old boy who fell down a lift shaft at an underground station in the Italian capital on Thursday, Rome-based daily Il Messaggero daily reports.
An employee of transport company ATAC and two security guards are being probed for manslaughter over the boy's death at the Furio Camillo metro station in south Rome, according to Il Messaggero.
The boy plunged over 10 metres down the lift shaft as staff at the station were trying to rescue him and his mother from a blocked lift.
Rome's Mayor Ignazio Marino called a day of mourning in Rome and ATAC said it was holding an internal inquiry.
The underground station was closed on Thursday after the tragedy but has since reopened.
Mourners left flowers, cuddly toys and cards outside the lift where the boy died.
