Italy's national anti-mafia directorate on Friday approved an arrest warrant for the Sicilian crime syndicate's fugitive 'boss of bosses' Matteo Messina Denaro over the 1992 assassinations of judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

Prosecutors in the Sicilian city of Caltanissetta had earlier issued an arrest warrant for Messina Denaro for allegedly ordering the killings of the iconic anti-mafia judges.

Falcone and his fellow anti-mafia magistrate and close friend Borsellino, were killed in mafia bombings in Sicily on 23 May and 19 July 1992.

Fifty-three-year-old playboy Messina Denaro has been on the run since 1993 and is estimated to have killed at least 50 people.

He became the head of the Sicilian mafia after the arrest of Bernardo Provenzano on 11 April 2006 and Salvatore Lo Piccolo in November of 2007.
