Police in central Italy on Thursday arrested a far-right football hooligan for the murder a 36-year-old Nigerian asylum-seeker who was beaten to death in an alleged racist attack.

Amedeo Mancini, 35, alleged bludgeoned Emmanuel Chidi Namdi around the head with a metal pole during a brawl that broke out after he called Namdi's wife a "monkey" as the couple walked together in the town of Fermo on Tuesday.

Italy's premier Matteo Renzi and other politicians condemned the murderous attack.

"Against hatred, racism and violence," Renzi wrote Thursday on Twitter.

Mancini is accused of premeditated murder for the attack which caused Namdi to have a brain haemorrhage and go into an irreversible coma. He died in hospital on Wednesday.

Namdi's 24-year-old wife Chinery will be granted refugee status, interior minister Angelino Alfano said on Thursday after a security meeting in Fermo.

Italy's lower house of parliament speaker Laura Boldrini said she was "dismayed" and "outraged" by Namdi's murder.

A a man who escaped the ferocity of Boko Haram terrorists in his country was killed, here in Italy, because of hatred, racism and xenophobia," she said.

Namdi and his wife reached Italy last year aboard a migrant boat after surviving an attack by Islamist extremist group Boko Haram at a church in Nigeria. The couple lost their parents and their daughter in the attack and Chinery also had a miscarriage after the perilous Mediterranean crossing.
