Former public prosecutor probed for embezzlement

Former state prosecutor Antonio Ingroia is under investigation for misappropriating public funds and was quizzed by magistrates in Palermo, Sicily on Tuesday.

The alleged embezzlement relates to 30,000 euros of travel expenses and a performance bonus Ingroia paid himself between 2014 and 2016 when he was managing director of Sicily and e-Services, a company owned by the region of Sicily.

Prosecutors allege that Ingroia illegally claimed for accommodation and meals over the period when he was only entitled to travel expenses.

Ingroia also fell foul of legislation outlawing the payment of performance bonuses of more than twice a company's profits, the daily said, quoting investigators.

Ingroia paid himself a bonus of 117,000 euros when the company's profits amounted to 33,000 euros, according to prosecutors.

Ingroia denies wrongdoing in the case.

"I have always respected the law, the statue of Sicily and e-Services, and the decisions of its shareholders," Ingroia said on Tuesday.

"I am stunned and bitter at these allegations."

Ingroia, 57, made an unsuccessful foray into politics at the head of a small leftwing party called Civil Revolution after leaving the judiciary in 2013.

He is also reportedly being probed for the severance payment he received when he left the judiciary.
