Pope Francis calls for landmine-free world

Pope Francis on Tuesday urged landmines to be eradicated from the face of the earth in a message to mark International Mine Awareness Day.

"Today is the International Day of Mine Awareness," he tweeted from his nine-language @pontifex account, which has over 30 million followers.

"Let us please renew the commitment for a world without mines!" the tweet continued.

More than 60 million people are estimated to still live with the threat of unexploded landmines, with countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East most affected by landmines.
