Doctor's alleged killer found hanged

A man suspected of cutting cancer specialist Ester Pasqualoni's throat near Teramo in central Italy and causing her to bleed to death, has hanged himself at his home, police said on Thursday.

Police discovered the unnamed man's body at his apartment in the Adriatic coastal town of Martinsicuro, where they earlier found his bloodstained white Peugeot 206 car parked outside.

The Peugeot car matched witness descriptions of a vehicle seen driving away from the Sant'Omero hospital car park on Wednesday after 53-year-old Pasqualoni was murdered as she left work.

The man had allegedly stalked Pasqualoni, a mother-of-two who headed the Sant'Omero hospital's cancer department.

Pasqualoni had made police complaints about the man, but these were shelved due to a legal technicality, according to a friend of hers, local lawyer Caterina Longo.

In a statement paying tribute to Pasqualoni, Italy's national association of doctors and dentists said it was "concerned and shocked" by her slaying.

"A doctor has been targeted who spent her life trying to save other people's," said the association, vowing to give her family "all possible support."

In September 2013, a male patient stabbed to death 53-year-old psychiatrist Paola Labriola during their appointment at a public health facility in the city of Bari in Italy's southern Puglia region.

Eighteen Italian doctors were killed in the workplace between 1988 and 2013, seven of them by psychiatric patients, according to research published in the bimonthly medical journal Rivista di Psichiatria.
