A total of 167 African migrants arrived at Sicily's Porto Empedocle on Wednesday, after they were rescued in the Mediterranean.

The migrants were aboard two Italian coastguard vessels and included 115 men and 52 women from sub-Saharan Africa, according to port officials. They received assistance from police, medical staff and from Red Cross volunteers at the port.

The migrants arrived in Sicily from Lampedusa island after being picked up in several rescue operations in the Strait of Sicily in the past few days.

Also on Wednesday, police arrested a suspected Nigerian people trafficker who landed in the eastern Sicilian port of Catania on Sunday with 269 migrants aboard a boat that set sail from Libya.

The Nigerian, who was identified by several of the migrants, allegedly sailed the boat before it was intercepted by Italian coastguard, receiving technical instructions from Libyan traffickers, police said.
