Moderate earthquake jolts Italy's Abruzzo region

A magnitude 3.7 tremor struck off the coast of the central Italian Abruzzo region early on Tuesday, the national geophysics and vulcanology institute reported.

The quake was recorded at 6.33 am at a depth of 7 kilometres and its epicentre was 20 kilometres off the Adriatic coastal town of Vasto, the institute said.

There were no reports of casualties or damage to buildings or infrastructure, according to the institute.

The tremor came after a magnitude 3.9 earthquake shook Abruzzo's Aquila province on 9 June, the latest in a series since last year.

Five strong earthquakes have hit central Italy's mountainous spine since August 2016. The quakes have killed 300 people, left several thousand homeless and caused more than 23 billion euros of damage to dwellings and other buildings including medieval churches as well as to agriculture.

A powerful magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck near Abruzzo's regional capital L'Acquila on 6 April 2009, devastating much of the city and surrounding villages, killing 308 people and leaving 60,000 homeless.
