The ongoing migrant crossings in the Mediterranean are only "the tip of the iceberg," Italy's foreign minister Angelino Alfano said on Tuesday, likening the emergency to a "biblical" exodus.

"What we have seen in the Mediterranean is only the tip of the iceberg of an exodus of biblical proportions," Alfano said in Palermo, Sicily.

In 2016 there were 66.5 million people in the world who were forced to migrate against 244 million migrants recorded globally by the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) in 2015, Alfano stated.

He made the remarks at the opening of a two-day conference on migration and security in the Mediterranean attended by representatives of OCSE's 57 member-states and its six Mediterranean partners - Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia.

Italy is the main entry point for migrants from Africa to Europe and over half a million have landed in the country since 2014 according to data from the UN migration agency (IOM) and the Italian government.
