Italy condemns Benghazi car bombings

The Italian government on Wednesday deplored the twin car bombings in the eastern Libyan port city of Benghazi that killed dozens and injured many more.

"We strongly condemn the attack causing many victims last night in Benghazi," read a tweet posted to the Italian embassy in Libya's website.

"Our most heartfelt condolences to their families. We urge all Libyans to unite their forces against terrorism which strikes indiscriminately and only causes death and destruction," the tweet continued.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blasts, which occurred minutes apart, near a mosque in the central Al Salmani district.

Ahmed al-Fituri, chief of a special investigation unit attached to the general command of east Libyan security forces, was killed in the first explosion, Libya Observer cited military sources as saying.

The twin bombings ended the relative calm that had recently returned to Benghazi after over three years of warfare wracked the city from 2014 until late last year. The conflict between Islamists and other opponents of eastern-based commander Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National army left parts of Benghazi in ruins.
