Populist govt wants to keep current health service model - Conte

The populist government wants to preserve Italy's public health service "as a priority", premier Giuseppe Conte told the United Nations World Health Organisation's Regional Committee for Europe's 68th session in Rome on Monday.

"It is 40th anniversary of our national health service (SSN), which is increasingly a reference point for Italy and worldwide - a model that is rooted in our Constitution," said Conte.

"We therefore support national health cover as a WHO priority," he stated.

Italy has the second highest longevity in Europe, and the SSN contributes to this, Conte said.

"All citizens have the right to treatment....conserving our health service in its current form and uniformity of care is a priority in our contract of government," he said.

Conte was referring the programme agreed by the grassroots Five-Star Movement and the far-right League Party which formed a coalition government in June.

The government also wanted to support its doctors and other medical staff working in the SSN, which is "a resource" and "cornerstone" for Italian society, Conte underlined.
