Moavero urges boost to 'strong' ties with Africa

Italy has a "strong" relationship with Africa and is pushing hard in Brussels to step up the quantity and quality of European Union aid to the continent, foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi told the Africa-Italy ministerial conference in Rome on Thursday.

"There is a complementarity between Italy and Africa. Ours is a strong relationship," Moavero told the conference, which was attended by 350 delegates from 54 African Countries and 14 international organizations, including the African Union.

"With wishing to detract from other EU nations, Italy is the member state that is lobbying hardest within the bloc to further increase and to sharply improve the quality of aid to Africa," Moavero stated.

Italy is hosting the ministerial conference because its geographical position makes it a "natural bridge" between Europe and Africa and its "future destiny" is closely connected to Africa's, he said.

Major challenges such as those posed by globalisation and climate change, demography, the growing demand for energy, and migration "have a direct impact on our relations", Moavero said.

"But we need to view these challenges as an opportunity," he said.

"We need to work together to improve development indicators to our mutual advantage, to find better solutions to the challenges we face and to better manage the great potential represented by Africa's youth."

"Italy wants to support you every step of the way towards a brighter future," Moaovero stated.
