Italy's hardline interior minister and deputy premier Matteo Salvini on Monday welcomed president Sergio Mattarella's enactment of a contested government security and immigration decree.
"The president of the Italian Republic has just promulgated our security and migration decree. From words to action!" Salvini wrote on Twitter and Facebook.
Mattarella enacted the decree after Italy's upper and lower house of parliament's approved it in confidence votes last month.
The legislation, which toughens immigration, anti-terrorism and anti-mafia rules is now due to be published in Italy's official legal gazette.
