Govt holds summit on EU's Mediterranean rescue mission

Premier Giuseppe Conte on Friday chaired a cabinet meeting on the European Union's Sofia migrant search and rescue mission in the Mediterranean - which Italy has vowed to pull the plug on this month - sources told Adnkronos.

Italy's interior minister and deputy premier Matteo Salvini, welfare and industry minister and deputy premier Luigi Di Maio, defence minister Elizabetta Trenta, foreign minister Enzo Moavero Milanesi and chief of defence staff Enzo Vecciarelli and Sofia mission commander Enrico Credendino were attending the meeting, said the sources.

Salvini on Wednesday said the Sofia mission will cease when its current mandate expires at the end of December if there is no change to the rules of the mission, which lands all rescuees at ports in Italy - where over 700,000 migrants have arrived since 2014.
