The United Nations Support Mission in Libya on Tuesday confirmed that the Islamic State jihadist group killed six hostages taken during its attack on the central town of al-Foqua on 28 October, calling the assault "particularly abhorrent".

"The murder of six hostages taken during ISIL’s attack on the town of al-Foqha on 28 October 2018 is particularly abhorrent," Unsmil said in a statement, referring to another acronym for IS.

"The senseless murders are a serious violation of international humanitarian law and may amount to war crimes," the statement said.

Libyan media reports on Sunday cited authorities in the Jufra region surrounding al-Foqha as stating that IS had executed six out of ten hostages captured in the 28 October attack in four people were killed.

Unsmil also deplored a series of attacks against civilians and facilities in southern Libya on Sunday and urged Libyan authorities "to take prompt and effective action against the lawlessness engulfing the region."
