FAO, Egypt train Libyan animal health experts

Animal health experts from across Libya will next week complete a transboundary diseases training course at the Egyptian International Centre for Agriculture in Cairo, in coordination with Libya's agriculture ministry, the United Nations mission to Libya said in a statement.

The six-week training programme at EICA for eleven Libyan animal health experts ends on 9 January and aims to improve their ability to survey and report transboundary diseases as well as early warning systems, the UNSMIL statement said.

The training course has been organised under a capacity building programme agreed between the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation and Libya's UN-backed Government of National Accord, which is being implemented under the auspices of FAO's representation in Libya, said the statement.

The course is one of many held at EICA, mainly in the diagnosis of veterinary diseases in vitro, planning, developing and managing veterinary services, as well as agricultural marketing and marketing infrastructure development, according to its director-genera Adel Younes.

"EICA views the collaboration with FAO in building the capabilities of Libyan cadres in the agricultural sector as part of the centre’s mission and role in adapting training as a way to achieve (the UN's) Sustainable Development Goals,” said Younes.

EICA is eager to make its laboratories and training expertise available to FAO thoughout the Near East and North Africa, Younes underlined.
