The European Union's Sofia search and rescue mission in the Mediterranean will end unless it alters its rules - which currently land all migrant at Italy's ports - hardline interior minister Matteo Salvini said on Wednesday.

"Either mission changes its rules or it will end," tweeted Salvini, who is also deputy premier.

"The Sofia naval mission's current guiding principle is that all rescued migrants will disembark at Italian ports - a 'masterstroke' agreed by the Renzi government in exchange for I know not what," said Salvini.

He was referring to the previous centre-left government led by Matteo Renzi, who stood down as premier in after a crushing defeat in a key constitutional reforms referendum in December 2016.

The European Council - the EU's top decision-making body - in December extended the Sophia mission until 31 March.

Currently commanded by Italian Rear Admiral Enrico Credentino, Sophia's core mandate is to help the EU smash migrant smuggling networks. It also trains the Libyan Coastguard and Navy and helps enforce a United Nations arms embargo.

Sofia also conducts surveillance activities and gathers information on illegal trafficking of oil exports from turmoil-hit Libya, in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions.

Headquartered in Rome, Italy, the mission was launched on 22 June 2015.
