Stranded migrants come ashore in Catania

Nearly 50 migrants stuck on a charity rescue boat in the Mediterranean for 12 days amid a stand-off between Italy and the European Union disembarked at the Sicilian port of Catania on Thursday after a number of EU countries agreed to take a share.

The 47 migrants, who included 15 unaccompanied minors, were due to be taken to several reception centres while they await their transfer to France, Portugal, Germany, Malta, Luxembourg and Romania.

Information was not available on how many migrants will be relocated to each of the six countries and how many will remain in Italy, prime minister Giuseppe Conte's office told Adnkronos International,

The crew of the rescue ship - the Dutch-registered Sea Watch operated by German non-government organisation Sea Watch - were due to be interviewed by Italian police who boarded the boat after the migrants came ashore.
